Hot emotions clamored in Angelique’s heart and head. They actually made her feel sickly warm, even in the cold that was battling down on her from the freezing skies above.

Outside the prison walls, Acorn licked her face loyally.

Everything was such a mess. She had no idea whatsoever what she was going to do next. Together they aimlessly combed the New York backstreets, until it actually started to snow and Angelique eventually, cold and hungry, decided they ought to turn in.

She was beginning to feel very tired all of a sudden; her whole body ached and felt sluggish all the time. She was several weeks pregnant and hormones were unleashing themselves all over her weary body.

Naturally, Acorn picked that exact moment to whine piteously to be let off the lead to conduct his business behind a concrete bollard.

Angelique sighed, for about the billionth time that day. Her hands were now white with cold and she needed to sit down. But instead of returning to her, Acorn decided he was going to play an impromptu game of hide and seek.

“Bad dog no!” Shouted Angelique as Acorn’s blond colored ramparts bounded into the horizon. This was all she needed. Feebly she set about following, cursing the mutt in French.

He was near all the way back home when it seemed he took a shine to one of the apartment blocks on the street adjacent to hers. Angelique looked apprehensively up at it.

But in he went without a care. It was almost as if he was looking for something or someone.

Angelique ran into the block as fast as she could, to try and stop him, but to no avail. He stopped squarely outside the door to one of the residences. It wasn’t an accident, it was known to both him and Angelique. He waved his tail energetically and urged her to knock on the door with a piteous whine.

“I don’t know the boy,” Said Angelique a little nervously.

She wasn’t sure if it was a good idea coming here or not and certainly wasn’t about to ring the doorbell.

She didn’t need to. Acorn let out a loud bark and the door snapped open.

There stood Lynette.

“Yes?” said Lynette looking at her with some considerable frigidity.

Angelique studied her face warily. She had been right; coming here was a bad idea.

But Acorn didn’t stand on any such ceremony and burst straight into the apartment. Why shouldn’t he? Every time he came here he got spoiled with doggy chocolates and other treats. Lynette doted on him.

“I suppose you better come in,” She said.

“I’ll just get him and go,” said Angelique. “Listen, I’m really sorry about Raymond.” Said Angelique, who suddenly had no idea what she was apologizing for.

Lynette looked at her with something like hate.

“I told you about him. We all did. Did you listen? It was clear he was unstable and was jealous of him.”

Hurt showed deep in her eyes. Raymond had been a good friend to them both.

Tears tumbled down Angelique’s cheeks, yet again.

“He didn’t have anything to do with it, Lynette!”

She said, beginning to feel a little faint.
